Q4 Urgency Is Not a Recruiting Strategy

Something I've noticed last week that signals the cleared recruiting market is heading into Q4 under a pressure that most GovCon workforce planners haven't fully accounted for yet.

Defense contractors are entering the final quarter of the fiscal year with open TS/SCI requisitions they were counting on filling in Q3 — and they didn't.

I've had this conversation five times in the last week alone.

Programs that needed cleared talent seated by October 1st are going into the new fiscal year understaffed. Hiring managers who held out for the "right" candidate through the summer are now facing program deliverable pressure with gaps that didn't have to exist.

Here is what that convergence is creating right now: Rushed decisions.

Compressed timelines.

Offers extended to candidates who are simultaneously being worked by three other contractors facing the identical pressure.

And cleared candidates — who have been patient, methodical, and deliberate through months of a slow market — are suddenly fielding multiple offers simultaneously and making decisions in days rather than weeks.

The organizations moving deliberately and intentionally right now are winning.

The ones moving from urgency and desperation are losing candidates at the offer stage to competitors who simply communicated better and faster throughout the process.

"Q4 urgency is not a recruiting strategy. It is what happens when Q1 through Q3 didn't have one."
